The data presented in the dashboard is compiled by the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency (BURA) from the 2017 American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS is an ongoing survey that provides vital information on a yearly basis about our nation and its people. For more information on the survey methodology, procedure, compatibility, history, and more, check out the United States Census Bureau website. The following alphabetized definitions of housing indicators and variables will help you understand the results illustrated above. 

Available Vehicles:
The number of passenger cars, vans, and pickup or panel trucks of one-ton capacity or less kept at home and available for the use of household members.
Burden (Cost Burden/Rent Burden):
Housing expenditures that exceed 35 percent of household income have historically been viewed as an indicator of a housing affordability problem and are considered to be "burdened." The data for monthly housing costs as a percentage of household income are developed from a distribution of "Selected Monthly Owner Costs as a Percentage of Household Income."
Gross Rent:
Monthly housing costs as a percentage of household income are calculated from a distribution of "Selected Monthly Owner Costs as a Percentage of Household Income."
Gross Value:
Value is the respondent's estimate of how much the property (house and lot, mobile home and lot, or condominium unit) would sell for if it were for sale. For vacant units, value was the price asked for the property. 
A house, an apartment, a mobile home or trailer, a group of rooms, or a single room occupied as separate living quarters. A housing unit is classified as occupied if it is the current place of residence of the person or group of people living in it at the time of interview, or if the occupants are only temporarily absent from the residence for two months or less. A housing unit is vacant if no one is living in it at the time of interview.
Share Owners/Renters (Tenure):
Refers to the distinction between owner-occupied and renter-occupied housing units.
Units Per Structure:
A structure is a separate building that either has open spaces on all sides or is separated from other structures by dividing walls that extend from ground to roof. In determining the number of units in a structure, all housing units, both occupied and vacant, are counted.
Year Structure Built:
When a building was first constructed; not when it was remodeled, added to, or converted.
